Monday, March 26, 2012

Had your heart broken by a scoundrel lately? Forget vengeance. Join the Marines. In the ultimate gesture of female empowerment, that's what Katy Perry's character does in the artist's new video "Part of Me," directed by Little Minx's Ben Mor. The promo debuted last week on MTV, and our Kiana Bicoy produced The Mill L.A.'s 2D and Telecine team who helped make it happen."

Katy Perry

Bicoy comments, "Ben Mor and Phil Crowe collaborated on one of The Mill LA's first projects-Pepsi Max 'Jump' featuring The Black Eyed Peas.  It was great to work with him again, especially on a music video for such a high-profile artist.  Greg Reese brought the film to life with grade and Steve Cokonis lead the compositing team."

Take a look below.

Posh fish & chips Friday for Flame trio!

Friday, March 23, 2012

So Chris Scott, Adam Grint and Bevis Jones have been working with the very lovely Sam Brown from Rogue and JWT on their latest spot.

To spice things up this week the boys tasked some of our incredibly hard working Running team to find some exciting new flavours around Soho.

And the Runners really did deliver... with an amazing South Korean spread from Kim Chi, Cobra beers and an Indian banquet from Imli, all rounded off by a very traditional Friday fish and chips from Golden Union - but with a twist.  Our intrepid trio donned their best bib and tucker to honour the end of a very enjoyable week of culinary treats.

We don't often get to see the guys dressed to impress and we'd like to say GOOD effort.

Get some “Bawbags”, and have a happy ending like John.

Friday, March 23, 2012

John is a dedicated young skater with dreams of greatness; but his giant baws keep getting in the way of his destiny. But the story doesn't end here… all it takes is a 19th birthday and the perfect present from Gran to get John back on the skate path to victory.

Joining forces with Scottish underwear company Bawbags and Edinburgh based creative agency, Newhaven, like three 'peas' in a pod, we bring you our recent work with this story of the underdog, directed by Austen Humphries. BUT, the story doesn't end here either… Bawbags donate a percentage of their profits every year to the Everyman Testicular Cancer Charity.

So before you get your skates on… get your Bawbags on.

Not Every Bad Apple is Rotten!

Friday, March 16, 2012

How many people can say they have collaborated with Hemingway? Bowe can! Director at The Mill NY, Bowe King had the pleasure of working with his friend Edward Hemingway, grandson to legendary author Ernest Hemingway, on the animated promo for his latest book: Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship.

"Eddie causally mentioned one night over drinks that he wanted to make a promotional animation for his new book and asked me if I had any pointers on how to make that happen," says Bowe. Familiar with his work and his style of painting, King thought it would be a great idea to add some life to Hemingway's illustrations.

"A lot of books on Amazon.com use promotional videos to get people more interested in their books," continues Bowe. "Often times, these are just fades between a handful of pages with some additional supers. For Eddie's promo, I wanted to give it more--his characters are so cool and quirky, and his style is unique. I thought they deserved more than fades, but at the same time I didn't want the animation to overpower the art."

Hemingway had accent artwork in the book, such as autumn leaves that helped with the transitions. The hardest part of the project for King was deciding how many panels to make the piece. Since every page in the book is a piece of art, it was hard to narrow down which pages to use without giving the whole book away!

When the animated promo was complete, Brett Anderson, lead singer and songwriter for all-female band the Donnas and her musical partner Jacques Brautbar created original music specifically for the animation.

Wedding Present Rocks the House at Mill LA

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

British indie rock is alive and well!

The Wedding Present graced The Mill's Los Angeles studio with a live rehearsal performance on Monday night, kicking off their North American tour before heading down to SXSW. The band, with David Gedge on lead vocals and guitar, played songs from new album 'Valentina,' and 1991's 'Seamonsters' in its entirety (marking the first time ever on U.S. soil-as quoted by Andy Gillespie, a Man City Fan who knows a little something about rock 'n' roll).

"Surreal! I never thought I'd ever introduce the Wedding Present," says The Mill L.A.'s Phil Crowe. "And as Gary Barlow would say ... absolutely fantastic!"

Wedding Present's David Gedge says, "It was a unique setting, which meant we were a little outside of our comfort zone. But, in a way, that kind of added to the experience since 'Seamonsters' isn't meant to be particularly comforting! We were very well looked after, so a big thanks to everyone who helped!"

Here's wishing all Mondays ended on such a high note. Cheers to a great tour, Wedding Present!
