The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon S1
Daryl washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why. The series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home.
From deserted streets to reimagined landmarks, our teams helped transform Paris into a striking post-apocalyptic world for Season 1 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Across six episodes and more than 300 VFX shots, we collaborated closely with Jao M’Changama and Excuse My French to create a seamless and immersive vision of a city reshaped by the apocalypse.
One of the key creative challenges was preserving the authenticity of Paris while reshaping it into a city marked by years of collapse and abandonment. Rather than relying on entirely digital environments, the work focused on seamlessly extending and enhancing real locations. Streets were emptied, modern elements removed, vegetation carefully integrated, and urban landscapes subtly altered to suggest the gradual return of nature after the fall of civilization.
The visual effects work touched many of the city's most recognizable locations, requiring a delicate approach that maintained their identity while supporting the narrative's darker atmosphere. Every intervention had to feel invisible, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in Daryl’s journey through a France transformed by catastrophe.

Achieving this level of realism required close collaboration between artists, supervisors and production teams throughout the project. From digital matte paintings and environment extensions to cleanup work and complex compositing, each shot contributed to building a cohesive vision of a post-apocalyptic Paris that felt both familiar and unsettling.
The project also showcased the strength of France’s visual effects industry, with a large portion of the work completed by artists based in Paris. Combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of the city itself, the Film & Series teams at The Mill were uniquely positioned to help create a version of Paris that could convincingly belong within the universe of The Walking Dead.
Through more than 300 VFX shots, the team helped transform one of the world's most visited cities into a powerful character of its own: silent, haunting, and forever changed. The result is a seamless visual experience that supports the emotional journey of the series while demonstrating how invisible visual effects can play a crucial role in world-building for contemporary television.
